Like chocolates and just junk in general. It's like we get upset and then crave fatty foods! I hate that..

It is a coping mechanism. Basically, eating is used as a crutch to help you get over something that is bothering you. Smoking is another big one. Smokers are just as emotionally tied to cigarettes because it helps them deal with things. You name it, when someone is stressed, they have a smoke, when they are bored, they have a smoke. You have to look for other things to get you through these periods such as deep breathing excercises.

See below for an article I found.

We are complex animals living complex lives in which we are not always able to cope with the difficulties that we face. As a result, we are subject to feelings of tension and stress, for example the cognitive dissonance and potential shame of doing something outside our values. To handle this discomfort we use various coping methods.

To help people cope, find ways to let them safely let go of the stress that they experience or gain a greater understanding of the situation.

Be aware of your own coping mechanisms and move to more functional means of managing stress.

If you are using deliberate theatrical methods during persuasion, feigning a coping mechanism makes it harder for the other person to broach an apparently stressful situation for you.

High carbohydrate "comfort foods" like chocolate, starches, and fats cause your brain to produce a chemical called serotonin which controls things like mood, emotion, sleep and appetite. Women are more susceptible to the effects of these chemicals and tend to repeat and overindulge in behaviors that trigger them.

Guys do it too. It's all about how you manage stress. If something helps you cope (eating, smoking, drinking, etc.) then you are more likely to do it the next time you feel stressed. I have a friend who goes running when he gets upset. He's skinny, but he's kind of a freak about it.

Umm not all women eat when we are upset. I for one could starve if I stayed upset for too long. I go off food when something has disturbed or upset me.

For those who DO eat when they are upset - it's probably something that is formed when they were babies. When they were upset, perhaps their parent gave them food to pacify their frustration or anger. This distraction formed a habit so that when they become upset, they turn to food for comfort.

Conditioning.

Im pretty sure its to do with endorphins and getting a high from the sugar etc which makes you feel better.

Women also seem to feel better after chocs because of their hormoans which is why you eat chocs around time of month.

I don't think that applies for all women but for those who have body image problems. I've met many women who indulge themselves into working overtime and stuff like that.
