I have a female kribensis and a male Jewel. The two of the seem quite enamoured with each other. Can these two species mate?

Heavens no they can't.
Jewel cichlids are Hemichromis bimaculatus, whereas Kribensis are Pelvicachromis pulcher. They are completely different species. It's like trying to breed a rabbit with a chimpanzee.

They might TRY to spawn, but they would never ever produce viable offspring.

Jewel cichlids get more aggressive as they get older, and he may be chasing the krib, which could be the "amorous" behaviour; actually aggression; which you are seeing,

However, neither are difficult to breed. Pick one type, get rid of the other, and then get one of the opposite gender of the species you chose to stick with.

No they cannot breed. However, many types use color as a mating que. I had a male that performed a lovely mating ritual for every yellow fish in the tank ( the females of his species are yellow ) As long as the fish was the right color he did not care...he even harrassed a few to death. They may try simply because they have the urge and no appropriate partner is available.

I don't think so,they come from vastly different genusses(?,spelling). and water types. Although now that I think about it they do share one thing, the bright red belly that both species get when they reach spawning condition,so who knows,it may be love. Stranger things have happened, but not much stranger. Get a male Kribi, set up a separate tank and watch the fun. Also male Jewels can get pretty agressive at spawning time so watch for this behavior too. Have fun with your fish. PeeTee

They may try , but they will not be successful.

Species are too far apart. There are some "manufactured" species of cichlids out there , but purists do not like the idea of an aquarist playing god.

yes they can ... most cichlids actually identfy they're own species by looks so yes with cichlids looks do matter. But there was an experiment done where the lighting was messed up and cichlids of different species started mating. So the lighting may be making them think that the other fish is their species.
