Plain boiled water at room temperature is safe and it prevents dehydration. For diarrhea you can use Kaopectate--baby strength--for safe dose check with your pharmacist or baby's doctor--it is natural and safe for babies and young children--my kids pediatrician recommended it often. However, vomiting is a serious problem because one may choke on it, so please do not live baby alone even when asleep, and do not wait any longer. See your doctor again, or seek second opinion. Do you have home visiting doctors in your area? It may be better for a very sick baby than an emergency room in your local hospital. Please verify that your baby does nor have an adverse reaction to formula or juice, for example, and it is good to sterilize all baby bottles, cups, plates, and so on, and to wash the bedding and baby clothes with non-allergenic soap. Every bit helps, Speedy recovery!

Take your child to the emergency room if this has been going on for two weeks. Dehydration happens quickly in infants, and you don't want to take a chance with that. Pedialyte, Gatorade or some other electrolyte-balancing liquid will help keep the baby from being dehydrated for a short time, but it is not effective for the long term.

Typically, a virus runs its course within 3 to 4 days. In the case of a virus, you don't want to stop the vomiting and diarrhea because that is what flushes the virus out of the system. It actually takes longer to get over it if you take anti-diarrheals. In your baby's case, however, it has been much longer than the usual term for a virus, which could indicate something more serious.

I have to agree with Nick Z, breast milk. My older baby got the Rodium (not sure how it's spelled) virus when she was 5 monthes, which caused her diarrhea and my Dr. said to do nothing but breastfeed because breastmilk has an ingredient that's supposed to stop diarrhea besides many other things. My baby recuperated immediately while my friend's baby got the same virus (it's a seasonal virus) and it took about 1 1/2 wk to get better.

Human breast milk has antibodies against a variety of infectious agents. And breastfeeding is probably the best natural treatment and nourishment for a baby of this age.

P.S. Don't give Tylenol or any over the counter medications without advice from a doctor or a nurse. An overdose of Tylenol can kill a person by destroying his liver. The right dose depends on the patient's body weight. And for a 5-month old baby, only a doctor is qualified to calculate the right dose.

Get a second opinion. The baby could dehydrate when it's coming out both ends. By some pedialite pocycles or regular popsycles. Little by little keep getting liquids in the child. Non-dairy, if the baby has a stomach that's doing that, then dairy will make it worse. If it's been two weeks, my doctor would have the baby in the hospital.

If it's a virus there is nothing much you can do...

If you have had the child vaccinated recently you may wish to review the package insert and look at the adverse reactions section. Johns Hopkins School of Public Health has all the package inserts involving vaccination. You should have been told about the possible side effects before they injected into your child. If your doctor didn't do this before they injected the vaccine, they just broke federal informed consent laws established in all 50 states.

What kind of virus is it? My son contracted a rotavirus, and it didn't just go away. That could be what your baby has. If I were you, I would demand that a blood sugar test be done on your baby. If he/she has been vomiting and has diarrhea for two weeks, they might have dangerously low blood sugar levels. That happened to my son. They checked him into the hospital, and got him re-hydrated, and his blood sugar levels back up through an I.V. They were also able to give him something to help the nausea. (It was a drug that is made for chemotherapy patients.) The poor thing! Imagine feeling sick to your stomach for two weeks! Once they were able to break the cycle of vomiting, he got better. But he was in the hospital for 4 days. If your child's doctor isn't doing anything to help, here, take your baby to the nearest children's hospital, and demand that something be done to help your child. Good luck to you. I hope your little one gets better soon!

Hello,
Whatever you do do not give the baby any juice that will make it worse. The best thing you could do is try to get the baby to eat some kind of solid foods like rice cereal or something along that line. Even some kind of bread.
I hope that I helped you and I hope your baby feels better.

Give child LOTS of fluids and consult the doctor about immodium (you can get it OTC if the doc gives the dose) but you should start considering other causes. Is it allergic to milk or the formula it's eating? Look for rashes and other things like fever. You should keep in close contact with the doctor because this could get serious.

SAMBUCOL for KIDS. Found at meijers for 15 dollars. It is made from Black elderberry (sambucus nigra) berries. IT IS AMAZING ON VIRUSES! cuts the time down.

I have been taking it as a preventative (lowered dosage) and have not had the flu for FIVE years. It is amazing. Yes, little babies can take it too, IF you buy sambucol for kids. Health food stores carry it also.
Here is a link, where it is on sale right now, but to get it faster, just know that if there is a meijers or health food store in your area, go there!
