Yes if the laptop has a free memory slot, ask whoever you are buying the computer from if all the slots are occupied or not.

Most laptops have 2 dimms which hold the memory. Every laptop I have upgraded it the past has always had 2 smaller ram chips to equal one. I don't know hat your computer has. I would suggest you open your memory door on your laptop (Probably somewhere on the bottom of the laptop) and check. If it has two 256 chips then get a 1 GB chip and put it in dimm A. If it has one 512 chip in dimm A then yes you can buy a 512 to get it to a gig.

Your laptop will be able to be upgraded to 1 G but how you get there may be a bit of a headache.

Laptop manufacturers usually take the economical way out for themselves. A laptop usually has 2 RAM slots. Since RAM is always cheaper in the sticks of lower amount of RAM, the manufacturer chooses the following way to get to total RAM.

If the total RAM is 512M, you will almost always see two, 256M sticks.

If the total RAM is 1G, you will almost always see two, 512M sticks.

The problem is that many times, in order to increase/upgrade the RAM, you may have to remove what you have and purchase all new RAM.

If your expectation is to simply purchase a stick of 512M or RAM to bring it up to 1G, you're most likely not able to do it that. It is most common to increase the current 512M of RAM to 1G, you will have to buy two 512M sticks or a 1G stick.

Hope this helps.

Check and make sure that the 512Mb RAM is all on one chip. Otherwise it will be two 256Mb sticks, and you will have to pull them out, and buy two 512Mb sticks to upgrade to 1 Gig
