I found an old family seal with these words on it and I'm having a hard time finding out what it means. I am assuming Latin, but TER is the only word I've been able to find a translation for. It is from 16th century England. Any ideas?

Well, ter means three times, Iames is most likely James, but the AVL I can't figure out. Aul is not a word. It might be an abbreviation for something. The V could be a either a V or a U, as U was often spelled as a V in inscriptions. Aulus is a Roman name, it could be an abbreviation for that.

It might be a reference to James III of Scotland. One definition of aula (with an a at the end) is a royal court or palace, a courtier, or princely power/dignity.
