I counted around 20 pairs of socks and underwear, all socks were recovered, but 2 pairs of underwear missing. Machine won't run now, and there's a wierd straining sound each time i turn it on. What do you think happened? could i try to rectify problem myself, instead of spending hundreds on getting the repairman to come over? thanks.

oh...there was smoke and some water did overflow out. seems like one or two briefs got stuck somewhere...do you reckon the damage to be quite costly?

You did not give the make or model number so I cannot tell you what to look for since there are many different machines and places wandering pairs of underwear can go to cause mischief in a washer. It sounds like you have one trapped in the pump.

It won't cost hundreds to get it fixed. It should be just the minimum service charge and possibly the price of a belt.

Check round the inner edge of your drum, see if you can see any fabric. Was this problem accompanlied by a flood of water as well. The underwear have caught and tangled in the drive for the drum.

unplug. Sounds like you have something caught in the pump. I think you're out of luck on this one. That's the trouble with that thong underwear.
