In the active voice, the subject of the sentence is performing the action. In the passive voice, the subject is receiving the performed action. For example:
I mowed the lawn. That is an example of active voice.
The lawn was mowed by me. That is an example of passive voice.
Generally, the active voice is the preferred method of writing.

Active voice means simply that a noun is the subject of a sentence. In passive voice, the subject is a prounoun or the noun is in the object part of the sentence. Here are two examples of sentences written in active and passive voice:

I drove the car. The car was driven by me.
Many people wonder about God. One wonders about God.

If something is written in passive voice, you use an -ed verb with a helping verb such as: am, is, are, was, were, be, been, have, has, had, etc. Active voice is the exact opposite. You don't have the helping verb with your past tense verb.

Pretty simple really. Active implies done by, while passive implies done to. Example--I hit the ball.(active)
