It washes off with water, but it not kept in check will eventually kill the plant. Does anyone know what this is or how to prevent it?

It could be a fungus or bacteria or parasite. I would take a cotton ball and wet it with alcohol and wipe off the white stuff that way. Don't let the plant sit in pooled alcohol, but a quick and thorough wipe will kill the offender.

Another option is do something similar with a diluted bleach solution, but if you make it too strong it will kill the plant.

You may have aphids on your plants. Go to a good garden center and if it is possible bring a clipping of one of the plants with the substance with you. They should be able to give you some advice on how to deal with this.

It sounds like residue from hard water. Try using the cheap bottled spring water sold in gallon jugs at your grocery store.

Look closely and see if there aren't teeny little spiders and webbing in the nooks and crannies. If so I have used cotton swabs and alcohol.

i heard its a fungus, and there is something you can buy in the store to spray on it, you would have to go to a nursery i think. and it could kill the plant if it got real bad, and spread to others.
