Communism, in the purist sense of the word, refers to an ideal society where everyone gives according to their ability and takes according to their need. Unfortunately, human governments are all corrupt and none of them are good for society.

An economic theory which stresses that the control of the means of producing economic goods in a society should reside in the hands of those who invest their labor for production. In its ideal form, social classes cease to exist, there is no coercive governmental structures, and everyone lives in abundance without supervision from a ruling class. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels popularized this theory in their 1848 Communist Manifesto.
An economic or political system based on the sharing of all work and property by the whole community

Communism is based on public ownership of the industries within a country/society as opposed to Capitalism which is based on private ownership. See the difference?
Actually, the idea or concept of communism is very good. It envisions a classless society where opportunities, ownership, basically everything is equal. No person is higher or lower than the other. It's rather utopian though. There is no such thing as a pure communist country. Even China wasn't purely communist nor was the USSR.
Communism should be good for society but the people turn it into a bad thing. People become too radical that they opt to use violent measures to attain this idea of communism. Communism should be peaceful and should be for the common good. Rather, people turn the idea into a bad thing.
Today, people, especially in my country (philippines), see communists as the devils of society. In my country, communists are seen as leftists, oppositions of the government. But, what people fail to see is the true meaning of communism.
So, my answer to your question is YES, IDEALLY it would be good for society, especially for the poor people, but WE OURSELVES distort its true meaning that it has become a bad thing for most people.

communism is based on the idea that everyone in a community shares in all the work and products produced by the society. this idea is actually quite old, if you look at hunter gather societies as well as some agrarian societies based in Africa or Native American many practice a form of communal sharing. it is generally believed that the early Christians also practice some from of communal living.
the problem with modern communism is that it is difficult to work a communal based society in an industrial world. large govern-ments can't enforce its citizens to be cooperative in the way a smaller village could. everyone in a village would know who wasn't pulling their weight and their would be repressions, such a system would be difficult to pull of in a metropolitan area. in general communism is only good for a society that is small or agrarian based.

Yeah. From each according to ability to each according to need. The thing is, who is ever self-disciplined to take only what they need, especially if they're in charge.
It is supposed to narrow the gap between rich and poor, but inevitably, it widens it. The people try to do what their government asks and take only what they need (since it's frequently illegal to try to take more), but the people in government always try to take more because they have to maintain power. A society is usually pretty unstable for communism to take root anyway, which makes those at the top pretty nervous that someone else is going to come behind them and topple them, just like they toppled whoever was in charge before they got there, so they do all they can to keep the people meek and to insulate themselves.
The book/movie "Animal Farm" is a brilliant allegory to what happens in a communist society. Basically, it's a lovely idea...it just really didn't factor in human nature.

Communism is a system of government whereby all resources available to the community are equally shared. The words commune, community, and communism are all related.
Communism unfortunately does not allow for individual ambition to excel beyond others (in other words, no Donald Trump or Bill Gates). Additionally, communism in its purest sense does not allow for religious freedom of expression.
Check out wikipedia.org, also. I'm sure there's a good article in there.

The only time communism has EVER worked was in the Book of Acts. And it was basically administered by God Himself. Considering that, I'd say it's unlikely in the extreme that society will ever find a way to make it work while at the same time denying God.

The original idea of communism is supposed to be good for the society. It means all humans are equal and get a fair share of everything. But unfortunately, most of the humans are selfish. Those of have, instead of sharing, they will use their wealth to 'buy' power. And those who hasn't, abuse what's being given to them. Consequently, this system will never work. It deteriorate the society instead.
