Better is subjective. From a speed perspective, a PCI card can interface with your system bus faster and with less latency than with firewire, however, the data rate of firewire can keep up with any sound activities with plenty of room to spare. External sound devices tend to have slightly less interference from internal computer electronics, and *might* sound a little cleaner, as in detectable with an occilloscope, not the human ear.
