I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE, it has the 3.1L V6 engine and 4 speed automatic transmission w/overdrive.....about how much would it cost to pull it and rebuild it and put it back in? i want to make sure i dont get way over-charged, i know prices vary all over the place but if theres a 1000 dollar difference then ill look elsewhere for another transmission garage....id even appreciate a mechanic to answer my question based on past expierence or his own price on it.... thank you

First, are you looking at a rebuilt transmission or having yours rebuilt? If you go rebuilt, what is the warranty and who pays for the labor if it breaks? If yours is being rebuilt, what is the guarantee?
Decide which repair you want and then get at least three estimates but five would be better. Compare all the estimates, pick what you view as the best 2 or 3 then contact the Better Business Bureau (or its equal) in your area and check the reputations of the repair shops.
You're correct, prices do vary a lot, but be sure you checking "equal" repairs for the dollars.

First you need to call a salvage yard and price a low mileage used transmission make sure that they will give you at least a 90 day warranty. Call a local independent repair shop and price labor for R & R transmission. A rebuild job can vary so much, someone can price you $2000 & when you pick it up it'll be $3000! If money is an issue your best bet is to go with a used transmission. Don't forget you don't want the repair bill to be more then the car is worth!

It is tough for someone to give an exact cost on a transmission overhaul until they split the case and see the damage that was done. I would expect a cost of $1600 to $2200 depending on how much damage there is inside. I am a service writer for a different car line. Hope this helps.

I had an estimate of over $2000.00 For the same car a year or so ago. That was for a complete rebuild, and all labor.Expensive, but it involves a LOT of labor,as do all front-wheel drive cars.
