Considering that here in the USA we euthanize hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats each year in shelters, many suitable to be pets and considering that there are tens of thousands of birds and small animals in rescues and shelters waiting for homes should the breeding of all animals for the pet trade-dogs,cats,ferrets,birds etc- be banned for a period of time?

That sounds like a good idea. I would sign a petition for it. I have two dogs, both obtained from shelters. Excellent animals that have been given a second chance.

Banning pet breeding is not the answer. It's stopping the Puppy Mills and BYB's that are pumping out puppies for a profit.

I have had doberman pinschers for nearly 26 yrs and have produced 3 litters. None of my dogs are "show dogs", but have had proper and adequate health screening done.

At anytime, no matter what the situation, if a dog that I placed can no longer be maintained, cared for, or ANY reason the family can no longer keep the dog, he/she comes back to ME. If a suitable home cannot be found, they are more than welcome to live out the rest of their lives with us.

If people can't rescue their own.... they shouldn't breed period! Think about it ! If every breeder would rescue the dogs they produced (purebred or not), the shelters, rescues wouldn't be bursting at the seams! Besides, once they had to bring a few of the dogs back home, they might think twice about it next time.

I don't think it should be banned, but it should definitely be cut down. It's like you said: there are so many pets out there that need a home and there doesn't need to be so many people getting their animals to spit out young ones. But...banning...that seems so final. I know it would only be for a period of time, but I think a better solution would be to limit owners who breed their animals more often than those who don't. A simple survey submitted to animal owners would show who breeds and who doesn't.

I think there will always be a need for pets and pet breeders. Its the junk profit breeders that don't care for the dogs that need to be stopped. Just like everyone else, I don't know how it can be done. Hopefully educating the buyers will help.

No. I think something should be done to stop the BAD breeders and the irresponsible owners.
