The game was created in the UK, so naturally, they would get a Slam. USA, France and Australia have contributed greatly to the sport over the years, so they would get Slams. All of these countries have a long history with the sport. These are national open tournaments that take two weeks to play, and have players from both tours competing at the same venue. It's the only time you will get to see the men play best of five sets and the women play best of three sets throughout the entire tournament in singles. The Slams are one of the few times you will see mixed doubles being contested. The weekly events have singles for either sex, and doubles for either sex. Chennai Open is just a tour stop, and not a two week event. They are administered by the ATP Tour. The four Slams, along with Davis Cup, Federation Cup and the Hopman Cup. A Grand Slam has a special status
in the sport, based on the number of matches it takes to win (7),
format, and also the fact both tours are there during the event.

The term originated when Don Budge won the first Grand Slam in 1938. In those days, when the prestigious tournaments were all for "amateurs", it was not common for top players to go to Australia to play in the Australian championships. I believe Mr Budge announced that he would win the championships of Australia, France, England and the United States, which four countries were or had recently been dominant tennis powers, and his achievement was called a Grand Slam.

Since then the term has become watered down by each of the four major tournaments being called a Grand Slam instead of a more accurate appellation.

Maureen Connolly was the first woman to complete a Grand Slam in 1953. Rod Laver did it in 1962, missed several years as a professional, then had another Grand Slam in 1969 when the major tournaments became Opens and admitted professionals. Margaret Court's Grand Slam occurred in 1970. In 1984, there was discussion of whether to credit Martina Navratilova with a Grand Slam when she won six majrs running, but, as the Australian Open had moved to the end of the year (in the hopes that Bjorn Borg would one day win the US Open and try to complete a Grand Slam in Australia) for a brief stretch, she did not have all four in either calendar year 1983 or 1984, and her achievement was not called a Grand Slam. In 1988 Steffi Graf won the four majors and the Olympic gold medal for a Golden Slam. Since then only Graf in 1993-4 and Serena Williams in 2002-3 have held all four major titles at once, but not in one calendar year.

When Roger Federer did not defeat Rafael Nadal in the French Open final last year, the record for longest gap between Grand Slams, set by Court-Graf, was assured of breaking.

Its traditional. Grand Slam is a term borrowed from baseball where the number of runs csored is 4. There can be only 4 anythings in a Grand Slam and in Tennis they haven't changed in 80 years.
