There is an increase in the number of muscle cells. The cells themselves are a certain size and don't get any bigger. This is called anabolism, where simple components are used to form more complex structures, which is the opposite of the body-builder's nightmare: catabolism.

The individual cells get bigger. The process occurs due to micro tears in the muscle which in turn leads to the repair process of laying down scar tissue. The connective tissue layed down during the repair phase adds bulk and strength which leads to an increase in size, this is referred to as hypertrophy of the muscle tissue.

The cells get bigger, they dont multiply. As you work your muscles, the stresses put on the muscles causes them to fill with more and more myoglobin, hemoglobin, and filaments, causing each individual fiber to increase in size. This causes faster, more forceful contractions of the muscle, making you able to lift more weight or run faster, etc.

They get a little bigger because your body packs more nutrients into them. And they definately increase in number. Bigger muscles=more muscle=more muscle cells.
