I dunno but imagine the am stands for "automated mail/mailings". It's obviously no coincidence that the name is SPAM - just like an organisation representing smokers calls itself ASH etc. ie it isn't just a random selection of letters - that answer about Sales Purchasing and Marketing sounds good but I'd suggest it was applied AFTER the word was invented rather than being the origin of it
