Boy oh boy, that is a tough one. As for me, I roomed in a residence hall for four semesters with my best friend from high school. And of course, now we can't stand each other, as everyone warned me.

Later, I roomed with other friends from high school at an apartment on a six month lease. We parted ways after that. I bounced from year lease to year lease thereafter, never really hitting it off with old high school roomies.

Basically, I can't give any advice from a success standpoint. My best advice is, if you can afford it, get a studio or economy apartment. They're pretty cheap. If you HAVE to share rent, I'd advertise on campus looking for somebody, and then after some face-to-face interviews, maybe a version of a pre-nuptial agreement is in order. This would really just be a written copy of expectations (for example, each one responsible for own food, weekly duties like bathroom and kitchen cleaning, no guests after midnight, etc.). Nothing you think of is too unimportant to leave off.

Communication is always the key. Don't wait until something causes you to snap to share that something is bothering you. In my own case, my roommate kept giving an apartment key to his girlfriend(s), who in turn would ransack the place when they found out about the other woman. Grr.
