I just had the same problem. My son took black permant marker and decided to place his name on his fav chair. This is a special to me because it belonged to my grandmother and grandfather and has been in the family for years. I know this is not going to help but I have tried just about everything to get this marker off my chair without ruining the finish or the wood. What has happened is it has removed the finish and turned the surface white so unless you plan on stripping the item I would leave it alone, try to cover it or plan on stripping it and redoing it.

I don't know if this might work but liquid bleach could be used.
A suggestion would be to try a small area. Apply with a Q-tip and see if that will help take out the coloring. Little applications at a time might give you more insight as to whether this will actually work or not.
Time and patience on this is required.

if its unfinished wood other than trying to sand it I really doubt it. When making a project and you use pen it doens't come out the oil and ink stay in it. Pencil you can sand out. As for finished wood, I really don't know goo gone is what I have used with color crayons before. Good luck!
