Okay I want to know if I have a wireless modem, does it have to be connected to a desktop in order for my laptop to work wireless? Also, will I have the same DSL speed as when I am connected with the ethernet cable?

Nope, and Nope

You dont have to connect the modem to the desktop, just connect it directly to the line and you are good to go.

Theory, you should be able to get the same speed, but practically you wont get the same speed. But it will show you a connection in higher speed.
