Mine is Toadette and Bowser Jr. on Toadette's car... you get the speed, plus the giant shells to knock the hell outta everyone :)

I know its tempting to use baby Mario or Luigi for their special...((and i know...it kicks ***))...but the thing is...you almost ONLY get that if you are in last or 7th place...and i dont like to drop that low...ever...
I like to have a racer with a good offensive attack...and a good defensive attack...that way there is never a time when you are outmatched...
MY favorite pair...((as an experienced mario kart-er (having gotten a gold in every cup on every difficulty including mirror and all-cup)))...would have to be Luigi and One of the turtles ((or Diddy Kong))...with the Luigi Racer...For these reasons...
Luigi...His special rocks in close quarters...its better than mario's because it bounces off walls ((not sure if mario's doesnt...but i believe i doesnt))...and when you are in front of the pack...its usually a pretty tight race...making this special invaluable...
((he also gets a bonus for his car...which i will explain later))
Koopas ((Red or Green...I use green cuz it matches))...The three shells special works really well if you use it right...if you get three red shells, game over for everyone else...its a great way to quickly jump up 3 places...and if you are in second...its a great way to slow down the first place racer...((if you space the shells out a second or two...your opponent will be immobile for almost 5 seconds...giving you an easy passing opportunity))
And if you get the three green shells, throwing them backwards in rapid succession is a good way to stop players behind you...((especially on a turn...where they will all bounce at slightly different angles...covering the track with all three paths of destruction...and if there is anyone near behind you...its almost a surefire hit))
((the color of the turtle doesnt matter...you get both shells with both turtles...))
I ALSO occasionally use Diddy Kong as my back rider...because of his special...when you are in the top two places, you get the big banana VERY frequently, and adding that to strategic places of the track will make a good first-place-banana-placer almost untouchable...
I use the Luigi Racer because it has the fastest top speed of all the middle racers, while not suffering the acceleration penalty of the heavy racer...its as fast as the wario racecar while having the acceleration of the mario racer...and it handles fairly well...best of all worlds i think...
And it is a little known fact that you get a TINY speed and acceleration boost when a character drives his/her own vehicle...making Luigi as a driver invaluable hen the race comes down to a photo finish...

My favorite one is the ghost king and the giant plant on the bowser car...their special is every ones special, so u get golden/triple mushroom, triple red/green shells, hearts, super banana, browsers shell...well u get the idea, u get every thing...but to get these secret characters i think u must finish all the cups with all the characters.
They are the best trust me...ghost king and the giant plant rule!!!!!!!!!

my fav is baby bowser and the red turtle shell dude, on the little blue cart. i love throwing that big shell on the the mini track.
