Both, but sometimes the first can really just be an accident.

I am not racist, have a very multicultural family, and love it that way.

BUT, at work one day I popped into say hi to a co-worker and greeted the room with " What's up boys?"

The only black guy in the room (who I'd never met before) gave me " a look " and I realized how he might have taken it. I felt like an idiot, but I really didn't mean anything by it. So I said, "I'm an idiot" rolled my eyes and left.

How could I have made this gaff better?

I messed up last night when I said "Beanie Boppers" instead of "teenie Boppers" I don't know what I was thinking, anyways Alotta F caught it and to avoid her starting on me again, I made up that it meant a mexican teenager so I didn't look like an idiot. lol. Now I feel terrible.

So the first thing is bad...but I guess I just kinda justified why I made a racist remark....dammit. Sorry.

i'd need more facts. is the person a racist or just naive? believe it or not, there are some folks who live a very sheltered life and don't realize how words can hurt or inflame other. could be that their justifying is them trying to get you to see there sheltered perspective.

i think that it is worse when people say something racist and then trying to act like they are sorry for what they said when they know that they are only apologizing so that the public won't lose respect for them.
