No, I am not one of those, even I agree with you with trying to better fit in where you go, but also I think that respect goes two ways, and what can be right depends on how open minded people are to ace pt another's culture.
I am from South America, and as a local, I have seen many tourists, specially from Europe, who like to go topless at the beaches, and locals respect that, that's the way the are, that's why they like to go to our beaches: to get the chance to do that, (though we locals do not do that because it would be considered 'unappropriated' for ourselves). Some of them do there what they don't dare to do in their countries. I don't consider them disrespectful, just different. Also, if any of them did that in a mall, or boulevard, they would be taken to jail!
Also I had to tell you that once, I went for a vacation to Baff, Alberta... there is a thermal pool and I did not bathe because I saw everybody (most local women) dressed in dark color-full body covered bathing suits, while mine, as a good Caribbean girl, was an orange and yellow bikini... I respected their culture, too, I did not wear it...
Maybe it is a matter of where and when something can be considered disrespectful or not.. so, the best thing to do for a visitor, is to ask locals before doing something that could be considered culturally daring, to see if it could be accepted.

Why do we travel ? So that we can see another part of the world , understand and appreciate different people and their culture, and at the same time have fun. I think its very logical to treat the locals with respect and to not do anything which might be considered rude in their cultures.
