We've heard it's cheaper if we hire out each individual process to putting a pool in, but don't know all the steps that it requires.

Had one installed 3 years ago. Hire a reputable pool installer in your area. Get recommendations and pick one to install everything you want. Let them be responsible for coordinating the excavation, installation of pool, electric, concrete and gas (if heater is desired) and gas/electric code inspections. Regular subcontractors work better with pool installers because they work their schedules together.

If you sub it all out yourself, you will be in for more of a headache than you can ever imagine. In the spring, a good pool company will actually come out and spray-paint the pool outline in your grass. Better than guessing at the location.

When they started mine (18x38 IG), it had water in it and the kids were swimming in heated water 4 days later. Note: a good package will include a underwater light (pay the extra couple bucks for the fibre-optic light), a loop-loc cover, a training class on the basics, 1st season closing and 1st season opening. After that, do it yourself.

If you do it indivually, you will need a mason contractor who is knowledgable in building pools. You will also have to hire an excavator, electrician and plumber. Usually, a pool company will have these people lined up or employ these people. In reality, it's propably cheaper to hire a pool company than to hire out each on its own. Keep this in mind, if you hire out, you have to coordinate all contractors for when they must be there. This is a daunting task, especially if you have not done it before. Hope this helps.
