I am looking into starting a 6 month catering management program online. I would like to start my own catering business one day, but first I would need to get some experience working with or for someone. Can anyone tell me what types of positions or places would offer me the experience that I would need? I know that there is more out there than just working for a catering company I just don't know what there is.

Catering isn't easy to get into, but jobs you can hold until your ready to open own business are: Waitressing, cooking, sous chef, kitchen manager, club manager, anything that pretains to food and the service end of the industry. If your catering you'll be doing it all!! It's gonna take a few years, I wouldn't waste my money on an online course, real life experiance is the best!! Take a course in business at local college at night or a night school, you'll need to know the business end also, a course in accounting will help too, so you can keep track of your books, payroll, taxes, inventory, ect!! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have learned a lot by working in hotels for the past 16 years, as there are a lot of different aspects to any catering event. A good position to start off with is working as a banquet server, then work your way up from there. Just make sure you are picky about the establishment you are applying to work at. Classy not trashy.
