The 318 has a bad rap but there's a lot of them on the road. BMW's are well built, damn near indestructible and reliable if well maintained. They are stylish, status-y (Important to some) and comfortable. Also, take a look at Car max and other used car sources and search for used Beamers. You will consistently find high mileage vehicles selling for big bucks. They retain value well in to their old age.
Now the bad side, you must have a certified BMW mechanic to do anything Major on the car. I don't care if Tony down the block has been servicing the family Dodge for the last 18 years, Beamers are complex and utilize concise measurements/specifications and you need trained specialists to do most things right first time. Also, Any repairs, even minor ones are going to be expensive. That's just a given. The labor can be negotiated but parts are not cheap. The car will last forever if you maintain it and that comes at a cost.
We have a 98 328i convertible with 98K on the clock and the maintenance in the last two years would equal a nice down payment on a new car. But we love our beamer and it has never let us down. The car has personality and rides like a dream. It's a part of the family. We therefore choose to pay to keep it running like a top. That's the trade-off.

Porsche had a commercial in the 80's and it's tag line was "Porsches are like children. You don't know what they are like until you have one." I always thought that was just a advertisment. Until I had a BMW and later on 3 Porsches.
I think anything can be taken to a level of "art". However, that level is hard to describe to another person; it had to be experienced. Then you will understand that an engineer is actually an artist. The mechanics of driving is just another artistic expression.
Having said all that, I must also say, you have to at least enjoy the act of driving; some people just don't get it. If you don't like driving at all, then it doesn't matter if I give you the keys to a Ferrari (I have driven many extensively but have resided myself to being a Porsche man first then a BMW; presently, I own a Mini with all the trimmings; a whole other topic).
So, my friend, go get yourself a BMW and feel it, see if you can truely "feel it"; the joy of driving. And if you do, then you will understand where that "art" of driving is and will, for the rest of your life, look for it. Good luck.

For 8999 I hope it has 10k or less miles on it, but I'm sure it has something more like 100k. You could get a 2003 BMW with 100k miles for the same price, and a much better look too.
BMW's are 'Driving Machines' and there is no better way to describe them. You feel every inch of road and every lb of torque. If you want a smooth, luxurious ride, you're in the wrong department. If you want to feel the thrill of driving from the moment you sit down, you're at the right place.
The biggest drawback is maintenence, it's expensive if you have problems, just make sure you research the right models on edmunds or consumer reports and go with a reliable model. Cheers.

What's good about BMW's is they are designed with the focus on the driver. They are rear-wheel drive and come from the factory with better handling and balance than the usual sedan. It's a drivers car. If you enjoy driving just for the pleasure of it, then it's a good choice. If you view a car as more of a machine to get from place to place and you aren't really that involved in the subtle, tactile joys of the process of operating a car, then you'd be better off with something a bit more banal and reliable like a nice little front-wheel drive Japanese model which is bound to be more reliable and cheaper to operate than any German car.

the 318 was possibly the worst BMW ever made. a serious afterthought and they have bad reliability issues. That also sounds like quite a bit for that car. I would look elsewhere.
