I bought a beautiful "gold" brooch in the shape of a fly or bee. There are some lovely stones decorating it i.e. garnets, topaz etc and there are some inscriptions which I can't make out. It is very well made and I think it could be either Victorian or edwardian. How can I get it dated and also find out the value. Our local Jewellers have never seen anything like it before.

Watch for antique shows or sales in your area. They frequently have appraisal sessions. Inquire at an antique shop. If they can't help, ask if they know of someone who can. It's probably better if someone sees it in person.
However:
Go on EBay auctions and check for anything similar. Try www.kovels.com for possible help.

I think you should take it to an antiques dealer. There are a few antique shops near my house and they always have a huge selection of interesting old jewelry and the people working know a lot about each piece. They will probably be able to identify what time period it is from as well as how much it is worth! Chances are, they will be happy to help you out, I've found that the people working in antique shops are happy to see young people interested in what they collect. Good luck!

I would try a jewelry store that specializes in antique jeweler. It sounds like you have a wonderful piece of jewerly. Also have you heard of the antique road show? It's a show that comes on tv. I think you can send in questions and pictures of antique items and they can give you a general idea how much it is worth.
