I don't know if the civilian trucking industry uses it the same way, but the military has been using RF-ID since the early 90s to track and control cargo manifests. As long as the seals of a container is intact, with the correct serial number on the seal. A container is considered intact and not subject to inspection when crossing a border or military controlled area. This also allows "live" tracking of cargo in transit, like FedEx or UPS. As cargo is removed, or you have multiple deliveries the manifest is updated.

Some civilian transportation companies can also monitor speed, engine controls and transmission function while a truck is in operation and make adjustments if needed, or schedule maintenance before something breaks.
