No offense at all, but I'll assume you have some "Practical" experience, if not professional. Hopefully at least.
Certainly it's as noble a job as many others. Everyone wants "Clean" I paid my way through NYU with my own small cleaning business.
Realize that some level of knowledge will be needed, even for a minimum wage position. I noticed one answer stated you'll be advised what to do,,,and certainly that's likely, as every boss or organization has their own methods they expect you to follow. That said however you'd need to arrive at the application process with some evidence that you know "something" about the process. We aren't always "hired" or can prove our abilities simply because we "Want a position" Example: I'd very much enjoy being a medical doctor as opposed to a theologian, but I know I have no real skills in that arena.
If you're willing to begin at the "bottom" (no pun intended) and the employer is willing to take time to "train" you in their methods, then you need only accept whatever is expected.

All good suggestions.......here's another side. If you do a good job cleaning (and you know if you do) and want to do residential cleaning just get the word out among your friends. Somebody always knows someone else looking for a housekeeper. (You can place an ad or put up cards in local areas.) Soon, word of mouth will be your best advertisement. I did this after I retired and I'm busy as all get out. You meet alot of new and interesting people. You just need to be motivated, meticulous, honest and tight lipped.....nobody wants you to let it out if their home is a mess. lol

you can get experience by telling them that you have experience. have you not ever cleaned your own place? more then likely you have. so yes you have experience. or you could come work for me,, lol I am a housekeeper that started my own business 4 years ago. I started first by working with a nother lady to get all the details on how they go about their business. and now I have been in business for 4 years and counting.. good luck..

is easy, because there is no way to have the experience without engaging your self into the system, so as time goes on you will have the experience and become the way you want

Check the yellow pages for cleaning and maid services in your area. Call to see who is hiring.

Start by getting a maids job in a motel/hotel. Your supervisor will show you what to do.
