'Cos thumbs are thumbs and fingers are fingers. Fingers aren't thumbs, thumbs are thumbs. And Thumbs aren't fingers, they're different, thumbs are thumbs...

It's 'cos thumbs are different to fingers.

They need to serve a completely different fundamental purpose to fingers. They're like an anchor when gripping, the fingers grasp while the the thumb locks.

Thumbs and fingers, good question....

There are actually 3 joints in the thumb. One at the base of the hand, (right at the wrist), one at the "webbing", and the third about 1 inch from the tip.

you actually do have three joints for your thumb. If you look at the palm of your hand, you will see another joint for your thumb right above your wrist.

As greyswander says there actually 3 joints in the thumb...the other is near the wrist.

you can feel it moving if you hold your thumb near the base at the wrist and wiggle it :)

well we only have 2 phalanges in our thumbs, the proximal and distal, whereas the fingers all have 3 (proximal middle distal).

As to why, well we evolved this way from our ancestors.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY YOU DO NOT HAVE 3 NOSTRILS ? ......IN ORDER TO GRASP SOMETHING ,YOUR THUMB IS CONSIDERED AN OPPOSING MEMBER OF YOUR HAND, AND BY BEING SHORTER FORCES THE FINGERS TO COME FARTHER ACROSS IN A GRASP AND HAVE A MORE FIRM GRIP ON WHATEVER GRASPED.......

Possibly evolution. You would have to check with the manufacturer on that one.
