I had been driving my '91 Corolla for about 30 minutes when both the brake light and battery light came on. A few minutes later the Radio shut off and the clock went dim. The car continued to run for about 5 more minutes until the engine shut down completely and the battery was dead. My first thought was the alternator but why whould the brake light be on?

Usually, this happens with only ABS systems, as they don't work if the voltage present goes below approximately 10.5 V.

Classic example of alternator failure tho. You might want to replace the battery if it's over 3 years old as well.
