In the US, we have no such confusion. Everyone knows the difference between an SUV (a Toyota Highlander or RAV4) and a Minivan (a Toyota Sienna). It's the Brits that are most confused since they call a Minivan an MUV.
"A minivan, minibus, people carrier, multi utility vehicle (MUV), or multi purpose vehicle (MPV) is a type of vehicle which has a body that resembles a van, but which has rear side doors, rear side windows, and interior fittings to accommodate passengers similar to a station wagon. Minivans are higher than normal sedans, compacts and station wagons, and are designed for maximum interior room; minivans often feature three seat rows and can seat 7 people or more."
"A sport utility vehicle, or SUV, is a passenger vehicle which combines the towing capability of a pickup truck with the passenger-carrying space of a sedan. Some SUV's seat 8 or more people making them an alternative to two separate vehicles[1][2]. Most SUVs are designed with a roughly square cross-section, an engine compartment, a combined passenger and cargo compartment, and no dedicated trunk. Most mid-size and full-size SUVs have seven or more seats, and a cargo area directly behind the last row of seats. Compact SUVs and mini SUVs, such as the Toyota RAV4 and Suzuki Vitara, may have five or fewer seats."

One is supposedly for sports and some off road applications (SUV) and the other is just a road going utility vehicle with a lot of flexibility.
