I see creatures with abilities like this "Pay 2 life: Return this creature to owner's hand.". Is this only good to save his A$$ if he's in trouble or has a nasty enchantment on him or is this also playable from the graveyard?

my interpretation has always been that unless the card specifies from the graveyard then no. return to head is from the playing field but if you play a card the requires you to sacrifice another creature then you can use the return to hand if it is an instant or interrupt.

The ability only works when the creature is in play. When something can be played from the graveyard it always says so on the card(i.e. Hammer of Bogarden, Nether Traitor, Chronosavant, etc).

It can be used in many ways. You can use it in a sacrifice creature/return to hand combo. You can bring it back to your hand and do a 'Wrath of God" and have the only creature on the board. I could go on but half the fun of MTG is figuring these things out yourself.
If it doesn't say return from graveyard then you can't return it.
BTW Hibernation Sliver will send all Hibernation Sliver's back, including your opponents!
