go to college and take a "Jazz to rock" class, there are also many informative/instructional videos avaliable at music teaching websites/cataloges.

Jazz has had an impact on music in general. If it wasn't for John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and all the other greats, we wouldn't have music as we know it today.
