There was no rock.
Jazz WAS America's pop music until rock came, largely because of the Beatles and the British invasion. Elvis too, in the mid 50's.

Because it was different, it was the music of the young people in the 1920's-1950's. Much like hip-hop is today. In the 1920's it was rebelious, provocative, and even sexy. Then in the late 40's of 50's Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, etc took it to another level.

I think that jazz is sitll popular.But the best times of it was in the begining of XX century when was swing.Swing was popular becasue it had clear rhythm and people can dance while musicians were playing.
