The ideal communist state (equal sharing of work and profit) would be good, but no country has prospered for very long, mainly because the people controlling the mechanism are already, "more" equal and abuse the system to their own ends.
Look at the former USSR, China, and Cuba.

You can find thousands of definitions of communism, but I can tell one thing for sure, it is the worst thing that can happen to society. I lived in Romania, still do, under the communist regime. It means being controlled every second, punished for having an opinion, not havin food, except some cereals and bread, only if you lie at the countryside, and if the regime doesn't take your animals or farm away.
It is nowadays considered a dark period in Romanian history. Imagine not leaving your country, not reading a book you like, not having Santa Clause, but a communist substitute, imagine not having Mac's and yes, Internet. It is the worst that can happen to society since the theory can't be realized nowadays, the way Marx or Engels dreamed.

The ideal theory is that everyone would be equal, everyone would have the same material goods and lifestyle. But this was only in theory, it has never actually worked. People had no freedom to make choices of what they would do (work wise), where they would live, and they had no real motivation to work hard. And, as in all societies, there were still the ones who had it better such as the government leaders.

Communism in my view is equality for all or equal opportunity for all. Better distribution of money and not allow money to concentrate in one hand i.e. just the opposite of Capitalism. In that type of socitety you are given your job and you live that way. I has never worked on a larger scale, but there are places ni the world that still run by communism and it works (smaller then country size). I believe on is in Israel, they allow people to come in and stay there to see what its like. I've been told its like a big family.
