There are several ways to get such pieces of clothes--one is to get HAND-ME-DOWNS from a relative, sister, brother, cousin, parent, etc.--one is to purchase used clothing that someone has decided they no longer want, like garage sales, or Goodwill Stores--another when a person gives you a gift of some piece of clothing they don't need. Each receipt of passing on of clothing has different connotations, promoting different feelings in the person receiving clothes in each particular way.
The person who receives such clothing is greatly influenced by feelings generated by customs associated with the passing of used clothing. That is, the recipient is influenced by the way such things are passed. Therefore care should be taken when passing clothes on--expressing regret that one can no longer wear the piece being given is better than saying, "here, you can have this, I don't want it anymore, or, I don't like it, etc.
This is a long sermon-on-the-clothes, so to speak. It triggered so many memories of such "events" that I couldn't resist sharing the differences here. By the way, I have found that a well made piece of clothing from the SECOND HAND store fits and wears better than a cheap piece from the bargain store.
Thanks for the question.
