Depends on how you have Firefox setup. If you have good add-ons such as ad blockers, then browsing the internet is a lot safer. Also if you have Firefox set to delete cookies/internet files when you exit Firefox then the chances of getting spyware are reduced even more.
As far as spyware scanners go, Spybot Search and Destroy should do just fine for a person browsing the basic sites.

Yes, Anti spyware is necessary when surfing the net, not just with Firefox, but with any browser
its always a good idea to download a couple just to make sure what one might miss the other should catch. good free ones include
Spy sweeper
Spybot search and destroy
Add aware

NO/YES Firefox has a built in anti-spyware and is being updated weekly. But if your solidary on pure protection i would say yes buy one.
If you do decide to buy one you should checkout 2cows.com they offer free anit-spywear, firewall.. But for even more saftey NOTRON ANTI-virus with built in spy-wear
