we're using the whiteorange-orange-whiteblue-blue-whitegreen-green-whitebrown-brown arrangement. until we found out that it should be like this.. whiteorange-orange-whitegreen-blue-whiteblue-green-whitebrown-brown! although our arrangement works, what maybe the effect of this wrong arrangement? does it affect the download and upload speed of our internet connection? because we noticed that there is a big difference between our download(370kbps) and upload(124kbps) speed.

I'm glad to see that a couple people pointed out that the color arrangement will still work if you did it the same "wrong" way on both ends of the cable. I can't agree with the guy that said you might have limited yourself to 10mbps instead of 100mbps... the wiring of your cable won't affect this, only the configuration and capabilities of any router or switch you're using.

The guy that said doing it backwards on one end would not give you anything at all was right; a crossover cable functions in a similar manner, but is not *truly* backwards wired and only works between two computers or two similar devices (like routers). So, obviously, you did the wiring "wrong" the same way on both ends since it works.

To find out the estimated upload and download speeds for your connection, you would need to contact your ISP or check their website; they usually have this information freely available. Different upload and download speeds are no reason for concern, though; they are going to vary and don't have a realistic possibility of even being close unless you're on a dedicated line (like a T1).

Finally, it's good to know that, concerning CAT5 cables, only 4 of the wires are actually being used. So, in case you screw up and crimp the end on a wrong cable, you can still try it and it has a decent chance of working. Not necessarily *perfect* practice, but still good to know if you run out of CAT5 or are on a budget.

if you used the same color arrangement at both sides of the cable, there is no problem. everything will be working fine. the difference between upload and download? are you sure you have symmetric line? is your UL an DL speed the same?

If you used the same color scheme on both ends, everything will work fine. If they are backwards on one end, you will either get no data transmission, or dropped packets. Either way, you should take the time to redo it, as you might have limited yourself to 10mbs instead of 100mbs.

The only effect would be slower speed.
