If you format D as a Data partition, do NOT put an OS on it. that will mess things up. put it on D, then reformat C, then with your OS on C access D and take out files, as easy as if it were a USB flash stick.

You need to Backup the Primary Partition, usually C: . This is the one that BIOS says is the Boot Volume. That is the one to backup, it is good to backup any and all Data Files and System Files, might take a 20pack of CD-RWs, but a backup of a healthy stable systemis the only certain way that it can be recovered if ort when it crashes or gets some nasty bug in it.

Fred explains it very good.

Backup files created by the Windows backup utility can be restored only by that same utility....
... meaning that if your hard drive crashes you need to reinstall Windows before you can restore the backup files.

Here's a better idea : just get some rewritable DVDs ... and copy your important data directly on those DVDs.
Store them safely.

You may also make second copies of these files on the D drive for quick & easy access.

The key to good backup strategy is redundancy. Don't rely on one copy or one method of backup ... if that fails you are screwed.

Write only DVDs are 25 cents each in bulk ... best & easiest option... if you burn one per week for backup it costs less than a nickel a day ... it's a "no brainer".

I also use True Image and have only positive emotions about it. I made a whole backup of my system partition so now I'm quite calm for my Windows. Before purchasing True Image I read a lot of reviews and discussions, so as I understood Acronis offers the best home backup solution.

so first of all, it is recomended to make a full image partition image in this case. and you need to have a backup software that allow you to restore this backup image when the system is down, some sort of boot manager. and yes if you backup certain files you can restore them anytime using the software which this image was made.
you can use for example true image:

Do your backups on an external device such as an external hard drive or burn the backups to cd's or dvd's. Every hard drive will fail, and when ut does, it doesn't matter how many partitions you have on it.
Good luck
