The greatest Sci-fi movie ever made was the original Star Wars! I remember the first time I saw it, during it's first run. The movie screen was about 2 stories tall (like they all were back then), and my friends and I were sitting in the front row, lol. I know my mouth was just hanging open at those special effects! Really amazing for it's time.

Ok Star Wars is out then.
Now I'll have to go with The War of the Worlds and not the remake with Tom Cruise but the first one.
The Martian ships with the death ray were great special effects for a time when there was no computer graphics.

There are quite a number of really good science fiction movies that actually have real science fiction in them. A short list: 1) Gattaca 2)The Final Countdown 3) The Forbidden Planet . Another "please don't say" you should have added is the movie The Matrix...not science fiction.

Well White Wolf, most science fiction movies have such stupid mistakes like "booms" in the vacuum of space. I find it hard to chose a fav, so I recommend watching (and reading) Dune, the greatest sci-fi books of all time.

You're absolutely right. There is sci fi, and then there's science fantasty. Different things. But the libraries will keep lumping them all together. I guess it's just easier that way.
I'm going to have to go with Jurassic Park. It's the only one I can think of that uses actual science to back up the plot.

I'll go with Contact because the whole movie focuses on human society's first contact with an alien intelligence rather than just using it as a setting for an action, horror, comedy, etc. movie. I also found it strikingly realistic being set in modern day and all.

Alien Resurrection. In fact the whole quadrilogy!
Sigourney Weaver is still one of the best female actresses around.
