That depends.

1) how old is the system ?

2) Whay have you done to it ?

people fail to understand that the more crap you throw on you the system the slower it gets. Web sites that make you download and install system files have a habit of killing your system. Also IF your running a PC that you've had for years then it's probably slow as turtles. You should upgrade your PC at least every 3 years, IF not sooner.

1) you need to be running an antivirus program, a firewall (Hard and soft), and sometype of a spy ware.

2) go into internet options and block all 3rd party cookies and make all other cookies asked. ONLY allow cookies to sites that you have to log on too.

3) do regular maintence on your system. such as defrag. I like using Nortons, because it has tools that take care of everything you need to do. It's easy. Others don't like then, it's up to you.

4) I read people saying restart, no need. My system restarts ONLY when it HAS too. Usually after a new program is installed.

5) keep your system up todate. Upgrade when needed. A new motherboard, memory, and processor goes along way.

Go to system tools and do a disk defragment
THEN... virus scan... spyware scan
THEN... make sure you dont have to many programs running ... you know the icons next to your time on the bottom right corner of your screen, if you have a bunch of them on there, those are programs running in background, and if you have too many and not enough ram it can slow down your computer. maybe close out of the ones on there you do not need.

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment (Defrag your pc)>Then run the Disc Clean-up

Go to the top of this screen to Tools>Internet Options>Delete cookies, files and history

At the bottom right screen close any running programs
Go to http://www.filehippo.com and download a virus protection program and other things to help speed up your pc.
Re-boot your Pc after doing so.

Get an operating better suited to your system.... There are various different versions of Linux that run well on slower machines. You could also try removing stuff from startup using a tool called winpatrol which is at http://winpatrol.com
