I agree, us Blacks are a unique people and tend to use names that are African, or whatever the case may be. Now, some Black folks go too far( their child probably can't spell their own name because of too many consonants), but I digress. Basically, we should name our child whatever without it being a racist, or hateful discussion.

I think that people just love to make generalizations because its the easier (lazy) thing to do instead of realizing that each race and culture are made up of a wide variety of people.
Where I live, the population is about 60% black, 35% white, and 5% hispanic. Many blacks do have names with several syllables that are not common or even heard of in other places (ex.- Lappacrecia, LaBradford, Tuwanesia). There are probably more blacks named Carolyn, Janet, Charles, and George, though. However many of the whites also have their own different names like Blade, Jett, Sterling and Hall. Some of the whites that are not associated with the main stream also have names like Dasia, Lashonda, and Tanga. So, it just depends on the perspective.

You made up most of those names. And people can change their names if they want to. There are plenty of professional black people with African-American sounding names. Condoleeza Rice is an example. You are racist, this is a racist question, it is trying to find laughs at the expense of ordinary people. Like nobody thinks Bristol Palin or Moon Unit Zappa would be hard names to live with. Shoot, I know a white girl named Misha Risher. How embarrassing is that?

edited out previous response:
Why do people think blacks name their children strangely? because some blacks do, and many people don't consider the diversity in black culture because it doesn't suit them to. also:
1. African pride movement of the late 70s- 80s. Felt as a way to
connect with their African heritage. Led to some just making up names
2. Blacks have often used biblical names anyway, which sound strange to some. it was a clear shift then to those who had no biblical basis, only understood weird
3. undereducated people in general tend to name their children
"strangely" either as a "gift" of individuality to them, or as a way of
fitting into their insular world (so a Deanashe in the ghetto will fit in, because he/she will be surrounded by Levantes, and Uniques, whatever). Ashlea will fit in the trailer park, etc. They're not thinking- how will this look on paper, never mind a resume? how will if effect my child if none can pronounce their names? How will spelling my child's name differently cause issues in the future?
4. Young women in general tend to think "outside the box" names are cool. (thus it's also a problem of young, out of wedlock births) factor in a lack of education and ability to spell, and you get horrific moments like "orangello" based off of sound.
5. the rich do name their children "strangely" as well, sometimes
based of of classics, etc. and you see what happened in Hollywood. Insular groups create strange habits
try reading freakanomics as well. it has a good chapter about all of this.

This was quite amusing and whimsical, I found some truth in a lot of the responses here and thought I would just like to say as an aspiring writer, I love the way different names pop out of our imagination.

I don't know why ANYONE names their children odd or unusually spelled names. But, I sometimes wonder if they are taking into consideration the problems such names may cause their children--teasing by peers, mispronunciation, etc. Also, I've seen some names whose initials spell undesireable words.
Parents should consider the life-long consequences of the names they stick their children with.

I believe that every Ethnic group thinks somebody names their children weird names. I think it is because they haven't heard of certain names so when they hear them they associate them with that race. To some the name Storm or Star sounds weird to others then names Jasmine or Darnel sounds weird, I bet Michael and Michelle sound weird to others.

i have a "weird" name, but it isn't those made up names like kanisha or kadika... it's actually a Jewish name. we rely on the media too much for the truth when all we are getting is stereo types
