Not all patches are installed via Automatic updates. Only Security patches and Critical updates. Some patches and hot fixes are only available if you go and look for them...usually when you have a specific problem.

If you are talking Windows machines here, then the answer is Yes, they are installed automatically, if you have it selected.
(And therefore yes, you do have to go looking for them manually if you don't have it selected).

If you have a My Computer shortcut on your desktop, then right click it and select properties.
This will bring up a System Properties panel.
Select the Automatic Updates Tab.
On there is the Automatic Option.
You can select it to download and install patches everyday at x.xx.

(Or ou can set it to download them automatically, and then remind you that there are new patches downloaded and ready to be installed).

The other two options are not worth bothering about (unless you have bandwidth restrictions on your downloads and then you 'might' want to use the notify me, but don't download option).

You will never want to use the "Turn off Automatic Updates"

Many users are unware that Microsoft have what is known as "Microsoft Patch Tuesday".
Usually the 2nd Tuesday in every month.

This is when they release their patches and push them out to the big wide world (whereas some big customers might get earlier advances).
Of course if there was an urgent patch, or an urgent fix to a previous patch, they push it out earlier.

But these Tuesdays are when most of the action takes place.

Even though I have my machines set to perform an automatic check Everyday,on patch Tuesday I also go and do a manual check (via the Windows Update site).
As you can imagine, on MS Tuesday, if I am number 289,123,032 in the queue, (they can only handle so many connections), it might take a few days maybe even a week to get round to me before it does it automatically.
So a manual check on this day (or the day after), sometimes gets the patches a bit sooner.

There are those that will say automatic patching is a bad thing because what happens if a patch comes out and goofs up your system. Well IMHO, the disadvantages of not being fully patched far outways the small chance of something like that happening.

One of the reasons why MS moved to a Patch Tuesday, rather than issue all patches as and when they are done, is that it allows them to better control the testing and verification of the patches before they are released. So the chances of something bad getting released are smaller these days. (It does still happen, but they are quick to fix usually).

So go make sure you are enabled for auto updates, and remember, yesterday was MS Patch Tuesday and if you haven't been patched yet, its because you are in the queue. So then go do a manual update and all will be fine (or just wait for your turn in the queue).

first of all some terminology. updates are patches. secondly, assuming you're talking about this windows XP Operating System. it depends on your settings, windows' default settings are to update automatically, there should be a dialog box when new updates are ready, if it says 'click here to install' or 'click here to download' then it means you have manual update. All you have to do is click there to update.

you mean updates for your drivers (video card for example). Im pretty sure you've got to scan to see if updates are available and all that in order for it to be released. OR are you talking about windows updates? You can set it to automatically download when available.

If you were asking specifically for windows updates I'd tell you how, but I dont want to get too detailed in it since i dont even know if thats what ure askin :)

That would depend on if you are on WIN XP and have SP2 and then you have to configure it to go and get them to automatically install. I believe that the default is to do that. So you should be good to go. Cheers
