i had to watch it at university as part of a spanish cinema course and loved it! i ended up having to write an essay about it and wrote a blinder as there was so much symbolism to talk about and so much going on in the film. i thought ana torrent was amazing as the little girl with the biggest frickin' eyes i've ever seen!
i've watched it a few times since...great flick!

I watched the 1973 movie, El Espíritu de la colmena. I think that is what that translate into in English. Anyway, I loved it. It was eerie, they way there was so little dialogue, but it was beautiful and moving. I found I had a strong empathy for the little girl who is trying to make sense of a story that has a powerful grip on her heart and imagination, and has an apparent connection with bigger, drastic events the real world, in a way she tries to understand. It was really beautifully made and I wish people were more open to foreign films...
Have you ever watch The Triplet of Belleville? It is an animated French film set in the olden days, but there is almost no dialogue so it's not really a subtitle film. I would recommend it to anyone. It's warm and funny.
