I think Jack is in a coma and that it is all a dream. If you look at his flashbacks he has had some contact with all of them. When he was arguing with the check in clerk about his fathers coffin.... locke was wheeled behind him and Jin and Sun were in the queue next to him. Sawyer and Jacks father met in a bar. There paths have all crossed and I think that it is all in Jacks subconcious.

Has anyone noticed a big connection in the whole idea of lost and its plot twists (both on the island and its flashback stories) with a very famous englishman ?
I agree with the coma theory as there is such a lot of symbolism and visual metaphor Jack's got to be dreaming this, dreaming a conflict between his humanist side and his spiritual whch is coming out as his own special purgatory played out by the plot twists from a collection of 17th century humanist writings and a collection of spiritual writings going even further back
The black smoke and 'the monster' of the forest are one and the same and its pulling people's strings more than people realise. It brought down the plane and split the survivors into two groups just as in the original work.
On the spiritual side the pugatory idea is enhanced by 'the others' who must be the angels of the children's limbo. That's why they take all the unbaptised kids away.

It's not purgatory as the writers have strongly denied this. It would have made sense if it was purgatory, but then again if something makes sense in Lost then it's normally the opposite of what you think it is.
Have not a clue what is going on.
The others told Sawyer that the are on a different island - how come then in the first episode of this series when the plane crashed, the leader shouted something like "run and see if there are any survivors"? They can't run across water.

I really don't know what the black smoke is. But i guess that the whole story it's not someone's dream or sth. I believe the story is happening, the heroes will be saved in the end,and they will learn that we all can survive without depending on the modern civilization so much.
To tell you the truth ,if the story will turn out to be a vision or a nightmare, I'll be disappointed.
But i really like the way you think!

Hate to break it to ya- the writers and executive producers have STRONGLY debunked and denied the "purgatory" theory.
There is something odd about how when a character finally completes their life, so to speak, they die. The Island could be causing this, maybe from guidance of the Black Smoke.
The Black Smoke I think is a security system. Remember you always see images in it when it looms in front of a person. It can "see" their past, and reflects it back at them. Perhaps The Black Smoke reports back to the Others, and that's how they know so much.

To be honest I don't even think the creators know what is happening, I think they make it up as they go along. Maybe they trawl the internet looking for the best ideas people have come up with and use them.
I think the island is stuck in a bubble of an alternative reality that was being tested for the purpose of a secret base. This was forgotten about and over time people have become stuck in it.

I've actually heard of that theory, but my question is, how can they die, give birth, or get pregnant if they are already dead??
I love the show, but sometimes it's so frustrating. You wait so long and only come away with more questions, and there are so many stories going on at one time.
I just hope all the questions are answered before it ends. I was so mad when Invasion ended the way it did after I had invested so much time in watching it.
