While Leviticus is usually the chapter most cited as the "reason" for some people's irrational hatred of homosexuals, I find it interesting that in that same chapter, there are some other "finite" pronouncements which somehow manage to be completely ignored, such as:

20:9 Curse your parents...put to death.
20:10 Adultery...one-way ticket to a dirt nap
20:13 Sleep with a woman while she is menstruating...instant death

Yet somehow, these little "sins" have not only been made acceptable, they are the topics of chat shows and vapid magazine articles. What about these "divine pronouncements" from Leviticus?

Seems a little 'convenient', doesn't it? Pick up on this one and let all the others fall aside, unnoticed. Very convenient, indeed.

In truth, most of Leviticus 20 deals with incest and one passage on bestiality which (I think we can all agree) is completely wrong, especially from the scientific facts of genetics and disease control. What annoys me is the specious leap of reasoning made by so many of the so-called devout who choose this as their cause: "Homosexuality is mentioned in the same passage as bestiality...they must be the same!!!"

If you doubt this, ask any hardline conservative or evangelist just why gay people should not be allowed to marry. They will tell you (with complete faith in their statements) that if gays are allowed to marry, then anybody wanting to marry a sheep or a goat will be showing up at the courthouse steps demanding that right as well.

And then over in Leviticus 21, there are passages about men being forbidden to shave; only virgins must marry--widows, the divorced, and harlots are to be ignored and never have companionship again; the handicapped must be shunned for all reasons, even blemishes. It's all there, but somehow no one knows about this. Interesting what people choose to take away from literature, isn't it?

Of course, then there is the whole question of the Bible being written over the course of centuries, King James taking what he personally liked and relegating everything else into the Apocrypha (like the gospels of Mary Magdalene and Judas, for example...) which is WHY it is the "King James" version...so many, many little examples of why and why not that contradict each other. Then you have the whole question of whether any of this actually did happen, or if it was all fiction to begin with...very convoluted.

Good topic. Have fun with this...unless, of course you can find some passage in the Bible which forbids you from asking such questions.

Here is a fairly balanced interpretation of the bible with regards to homosexuality. It covers both conservative and liberal views and the background on translations.

As a side note, Jesus never made any comments in the bible concerning homosexuality.

As a side note, you might ask posters to name the version of the bible they are quoting from.

The well-known Biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah reveals God’s feelings about homosexuality. God declared: “The cry of complaint about Sodom and Gomorrah, yes, it is loud, and their sin, yes, it is very heavy.” (Genesis 18:20) And they kept calling out to Lot and saying to him: ‘Where are the men who came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intercourse with them.’” (Genesis 19:4, 5) The Bible says: “The men of Sodom were bad and were gross sinners against Jehovah.”—Genesis 13:13.

The men became “violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males.” (Romans 1:27) They had “gone out after flesh for unnatural use.” (Jude 7)

You must not lie down with a male the same as you lie down with a woman. It is a detestable thing.”— Leviticus 18:22.

"If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination." (Leviticus 20:13)

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
