Because life in America is actually so carefree and easy compared to the rest of the world throughout history, Americans have enough spare time to sit in front of the TV and let themselves be hypnotized into thinking that those crooked tooth inbreds really are better than they.

I believe Americans are interested in Royalty for the same reason they are interested in Actors and the Hollywood scene. Why do you care so much about Madonna, Paris Hilton (she's just a rich spoiled brat acting badly)etc.??
Since 1815 you've had nothing to do with the British although I find it interesting you consider "The Kennedy's" to be your Royalty. Give me a break....if you don't like Royalty, why try and "make" a Royal family?????
As Canadians we are part of the Commonwealth and many of us still are very proud of our British Heritage. (by the way only Wales and England are considered British by most...Scotland wants independence and Ireland already has it....but we're all considered to be British). The Royal Family does a lot of Charity Work etc and earn the little bit of money they get from the Government (they mostly survive on the Duchy of Cornwall monies). Ever been to England...you'll notice in London how much tourism they create - they are well worth the money.
As the largest Royal Family in existance, I think the world as a whole is interested. We always want what we don't have.
As far as inbreeding...maybe years ago when they had to marry royalty from other british countries...they'd marry a distant cousin. (it's legal in the USA to marry a cousin) Now that they can marry upper class commoners, that's over with.

I think "care" is an emotive word which has encouraged a lot of Americans into a reactionary "Well I don't care about them" type of response. Some people are equating 'care' with 'jealousy', which isn't the case.

I think the answer is 'stereotypes'. Spending time in America, many people have asked me what I think of the Royal Family. Why? Its not because they care, per ce, its because they know precious little about the UK and want to show their interest. They know about the Royal Family, probably from the TV or magazines, so ask about them, thinking that people in the UK care about the Royal Family, which isn’t always the case.

Americans generally don't care about the Royal Family - the media do and in the age of vacuous celebrities, the Royal Family fit pretty well into this. What makes them more interesting to some people I suppose is the history and heritage behind the idea of a ‘Royal Family’ – an alien concept in America for the last 200 odd years.

As an aside, I'm not a royalist at all, but people shouldn't get so smug about not having them - Holland, Norway, Belgium, Sweden, Spain and Denmark all have them and are hardly bad countries. At least the Royal Family dont' have power anymore, unlike, for example, a president…and we all know what kind of mistakes presidents can make with not enough brains and too much power. No democracy is perfect.

Well, I like Queen Elizabeth II as a person, but I object to even the idea of royalty. My culture doesn't have hereditary rights, never has. Plus I learned forever ago that the royals had their share of inbreeding, another taboo in my culture. So although I like the Queen as a person, I don't like the idea the Europeans have of royalty. We don't have that, and if we did, we wouldn't be Cherokee people... or American people in the case of most.

Well it's because of the fairy tales we were brought up on and the fact that Prince William is so hot and really the handsome prince that many of us dream of, that's why we are so interested. And the British royal family in some ways seem like the ultimate fairytale. It has mystery, youthful deaths, romance, and lots of scandal. I mean the fairytales had scandals such as the evil witches, evil step families, etc.

Real Americans do not care about royalty because they lack it. When the Africans came into American the Americans could have learn about royalty but thier pride would not allow them. Real Americans in my opinion do not respect royalty they hold it with disdain. (Personal opinion)

The most I could tell you about recent British Royalty is that Lady Diana was killed in a car crash. There is the Queen Elizabeth II, her Son Charles and his sons Edward and......William? I don't know who Elizabeth II was married to. Or the name of Charles' new wife (he got remarried right?) But about their personal lives, I don't know anything. I'm not sure where you get the idea that we have this infatuation.

Jealousy, and Holywood hype it up to be a very high standard of living. Most Americans do not have such a high standard of living. The people on here who say they don't are lying... The Royal faimily is splattered all over US magazines and Television and there are many American movies about American girls who become part of royalty.

I think it is because deep down we realize that our ancestors made a mistake by leaving Great Britain. America is a mess! Our government is for sale to the highest bidder and now apparently is citizenship, social security benefits, and even the right to own our highways! I think that the Royal family reminds us of what we are lacking.
