Ticklishness comes from the "surprise" of being touched by someone (even when you know they are approaching you, your brain doesn't know exactly when they touch you).

When you try to tickle yourself, your brain knows exactly when you touch because that signal is going through the same body.

Jokes, tickles and other laughter inducing stimuli must have an element of surprise for them to work. Once the element of surprise is removed, the humor is lost. Next time you hear a bad joke, pay attention and see that the punch line must have been predictable. The same thing with tickling oneself, you know the location and the intensity of your own touch, thus eliminating the essence of the laughter inducing stimuli.

Dear friend
This is much heard about doubt, which has many weird and exhausting answers....

"Our mind gives us a sense of stimulation to react for every unpredicted changes in the surrounding (mostly associated with our reflex actions coordinated by the neuro-endocrine system). This reaction is stimulated only when we are unaware or ignorant about this action. In the case of tickling oneself, this unpredictability or surprise is absent. This also leads to the lack of mental jerk or so called TICKLE."

The short explanation is that our bodies are trained to anticipate our own actions and, quite simply, if you try and tickle yourself you'll see it coming and the desired reaction will not be elicited.

To get slightly more technical, you can blame your cerebellum for being the killjoy here. The Brain scientists at the University College London conducted a lovely study investigating this very phenomenon (or lack thereof, I suppose).

Check my sources for a more in-depth explanation.

Because we can tell where our fingers are going to go but we can't tell that when someone else does it.

Good question, I think it is just your mind saying that when you do it, you are not ticklish, but when other people do it....
