It's because of how society has defined value.

A woman's value used to be defined by her looks, her reproductive capabilities and her homemaking skills. Only 1 of those traits improves over time, the others decline and/or totally disappear with age.

A man's value used to be defined by his ability to make an living. Typically, this value increases over time, making the man more valuable at an older age than young.

Do these things still apply? Yes, but certainly not as much as it used to. Men are now being judged on looks and women are being evaluated on their income potential. Both sides are getting a taste of the older stereotypes. But old habits die hard and things don't completely change overnight. The above value systems were still very much in place only 40 years ago. People who were raised with this social outlook are only now turning 60.

There is a weird double standard in western culture wjere a man as he ages gets 'more distinguished', yet a woman just gets old.
This standard is promoted by the movies, and those that act in the movies. How many older actors are married to 20-something actresses?
I think that when it really gets down to the wire (when persons of both genders approach the 80's) both are equally aware of there impending mortality.

In general, it is connected with reproductive cycle which is shorter for females than males. Females reach their reproductive peak when they are about 25 and than it starts to decline rather rapidly. Men don't loose their reproductive ability until old age. Connected with that are the good looks which are usually very important to males in search of partner. Females have tendency to put more value on other characteristics. Foundations for this phenomenon are biological and cultural.

I believe its because the age makes a woman look older and naturally make us less atractive, eventougth you take good care of your self, eat healthy, exercise, etc, in a woman is more notorious the body changes.
On the other hand, in man the body changes are less, and not so notorious, and some of them are even good changes. In fact a man with some gray hair, and wrinkles looks kind of atractive.
That migth be because women like on a man the strength compromise, maturity, stability, all those are acomplished by men with the time.
While men looks for the body, figure and nice face on a woman. In fact is not so atractive to most men, a woman who is succesful, stable, and with some years in the back.
And, eventougth we had a boyfriend, husband, wife, girlfriend, a partner for your life, you will always get plasure in being atractive to the opposite sex, that some men -(or woman) likes you and the feeling of someone trying to get to you is always nice, isn't it?

Women are under far more pressure to look young and pretty, both from women and from men. How many ugly and/or old men are on the nightly news? How many ugly and/or old women are? A woman can be Miss USA, Miss World, Miss Universe, etc., but how many beauty .... I mean "scholarship" pageants exist for men?

I think men accept aging while women rail against it, based on societal standards which we internalize until we share those standards.

Because men fall in love with their EYES and women fall in love with their EARS. Stereotypically, which we all claim we are NOT judging or 'going by', men love the beauty and youth of a woman making younger women more attractive to all ages for any male's ego.
Women want to hear they are beautiful and want romance and poetry about their charms. A man can praise a woman no matter how old he is, getting possibly even better with age!!
Men love women the younger and shaplier they are. So older women can be quite pathetic in their race to compete to 'stay young' ( or fake young with horrendous amounts of plastic surgery) but times does the damage and leaves them less attractive to men as the years go by.
Those are the stereotypes we all keep in the back of our mind.
Young sexy woman = Rich or gorgeous man. I say, ladies be attractive for your appropriate age, understand men, and use your smarts for figures $$$$ ( just like men do) @8=)

Living past fifty is not an accomplishment that pumps up your social stature in this "who’s the fairest in the land" society. We revel in the sleek potency of prime time and find nothing nice about the crusty, fusty lid that age seems to clamp over the zippity-doo-dah of youth.

Because they are afraid that getting older will make them unwanted by the oppisite sex, thus unloved. Our culture is all about young attractive women who are still able to have babies, not older more mature looking women who can't reproduce anymore. And men can continue to reproduce at anytime in their life, so they have less to worry about.

Because, when women are younger they are considered more attractive than when they age. Attractiveness in women correlates strongly with opportunities to mate. In men, good looks will increase a males chance to mate, but other factors such as power and ability to rear children are also important.

To put it crudly; women like men with money, men like women who are young and good looking.

Because women have been taught that in order to get and keep a man she has to be pretty. Men on the other hand have been traditionally judged by their money/power. I think it's bullsh**, but hey I don't sweat it.
