The G in G-string does not actually stand for anything. It refers to the shape of the back of the underwear.

Tilt an uppercase G one turn counterclockwise. It looks like a bottom wearing a G-string, doesn't it?

For the same reason, other cultures refer it as a T-back.

The origin of the term "G-string" is obscure. The term is first attested in writings by Americans in the late 1800's regarding the loincloth of Philippine natives. Others attest it to being the g-string on an instrument. The origin of the word "thong" is from the Old English thwong, a flexible leather cord.
