send off for my birth certifacte first before going to get a replacement?

You can go to your local Social Security Office and apply for a replacement card, or you can get the application form online. You will have to take the form to your local office because they have to see your birth certificate to prove that it's really you applying for a replacement card.

Get on the social security website, there's a link for replacing your card. They send you paperwork, It's a process though, I think you may have to send your actual birth certificate and picture I.D. and they'll send it back. Or you could look up the closest social security office.
